Fire or smoke right now? Get out. Stay out. Call 911 from a safe place in the U.S. What to do
A plan is a gift of safety

Make a plan. Practice together.

Ask a grown-up to help. Every home is different, so talk about your real exits, choose a safe meeting spot outside, and practice at least twice a year.

01

Pick a safe outside meeting spot

Pick a specific spot a safe distance from your building, away from traffic and emergency vehicles.

02

Know your two ways out

Find two ways out of each room whenever possible. An adult must check that each route is practical and safe.

03

Plan who helps

Do not include names, addresses, phone numbers, or other private details here.

Your browser's print dialog can also save the worksheet as a PDF.

Practice before an emergency

Three family activities to try together

1

Walk the exits

With an adult, visit each room and point to two safe ways out, if available.

2

Go to the meeting spot

Everyone follows a safe route and meets at the same place outside.

3

Practice twice a year

Use the smoke alarm test button during a planned household drill and rehearse leaving promptly.
